So I was listening to a song on the radio the other day, when I noticed a grammatical mistake in the lyrics. I figure that everyone likes the guy that points out grammatical mistakes in pop culture, so I decided to blog about it.
Ready for this……
The song is “Life Is A Highway,” by Tom Cochrane. The lyrics are:
“There was a distance between you and I. A misunderstanding once, but now we look in the eye.”
The lyric should have been: “There was a distance between you and me.” The old ‘I’ after ‘You’ except after ‘Between’ rule. Of course, “me” doesn’t rhyme with “eye,” so Mr. Cochrane is going to have to change that second line, too. Maybe the word “eye” can be changed to “tree.” Or “flea.” Or “referee.” “A misunderstanding once, but now we look to a referee.” It’s perfect. And now the song is about marriage counseling. Way to inspire America to stay together, Tom.
